Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children (TSRHC) opened its doors to the children of Texas in 1921 when a group of Texas masons approached Dallas' first orthopedic surgeon Dr. W. B. Carrell about caring for children with polio regardless of the family’s ability to pay.
For more than 85 years, TSRHC has remained dedicated to the children of Texas and has never charged a patient family for the world-class treatment it provides. Since our inception in 1921, TSRHC has provided care for more than 180,000 children and has emerged as a world leader in pediatric orthopedic research, treatment and education.
During its early years, the hospital primarily treated children with polio. However, in the 1950s the discovery of the polio vaccines allowed TSRHC to expand its treatment to include a more diverse clinical population with a wide range of orthopedic conditions.
Today, TSRHC is one of the nation’s leading pediatric centers for the treatment of orthopedic conditions, certain related neurological disorders and learning disorders, such as dyslexia. There is no charge to patient families for treatment at the hospital, and admission is open to Texas children from birth to 18 years of age.
The TSRHC Executive and Clinical Team
J. C. Montgomery, Jr. joined the staff of TSRHC in 1974 and has served as president of the hospital since 1989. Dr. Tony Herring, TSRHC’s third chief of staff, heads the hospital’s medical team. Dr. John G. Birch is assistant chief of staff and medical director of ambulatory care at TSRHC, and Dr. Charles E. Johnston is assistant chief of staff and medical director of research. Dr. B. Stephens Richards is assistant chief of staff and medical director of inpatient services.
